Open For Business, a coalition of leading global companies, has sparked a deep-seated revolution in the realm of inclusion and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community at the workplace. Helmed by companies like Microsoft, Google, AT&T, IBM, LinkedIn, KPMG, Barclays, Goldman Sachs, and Virgin, the coalition has been pointed at addressing the discrimination that the LGBTQ+ community receives from various quarters across the globe. In its latest report, Open For Business highlights one of the most promising developments in India so far; that despite the country’s oppressive anti-LGBTQ+ laws, a clutch of companies is serving to broaden their workforce with more LGBTQ+ talent.
Open For Business’s recent conclave in Mumbai saw participation from an array of homegrown companies like Godrej and Tata Sons, and from multinational conglomerates like Intuit and BNY. A handful of companies have already spoken out about their intention of enhancing the diversity of their workforce. Tata Steel, for instance, has already committed to including diverse groups as part of 25% of their workforce by 2020, of which 5% will be LGBTQ+. Likewise, Indian companies like Tata Global Beverages, Mahindra & Mahindra, Dr. Reddy’s, Wipro, Tech Mahindra, and Lupin Laboratories have also declared a more open approach to the community.
The issue is, despite most companies having a code of ethics and policies in place, the corporate LGBTQ+ community is still disparaged and harassed, with approximately 40% claiming that they have been victims of discrimination and denigration. The report also draws a correlation between innovation and openness. It suggests that a national ecosystem built on tolerance, free expression and cosmopolitanism can influence society and in turn, an economy. India, unfortunately, currently features on the bottom end of this spectrum. However, there is some glimmer of hope arising from cities like New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore that are considered ‘low-risk’ and stand on equal footing with Bangkok and Manila with reference to the inclusion of this community in the corporate arena.
