International Men’s Day really? Do we need such a celebration? The fundamental question is – if we can observe International Women’s Day, Children’s Day then why not recognize the contribution made by men? The first announcement of this day was initiated by Thomas Oaster in 1992. This day assumes significance given that some men have an overarching influence on our lives. They may be leaders, family or colleagues. Often, they become role models and have an impact on our personalities. At OHM we look at this day, to raise awareness about health and well-being of men.

Is there a need for International Men’s Day?
This may come as a surprise for some, but most of us know that men’s health is as critical as women’s. But the reality is that behind the macho façade, men need as much care and nurturing like the rest of us. Every man plays multiple roles such as caring father, loving husband, adorable brother, happy boyfriends. Most importantly, they are sensitive human beings though they may not wear their emotions on their sleeves.

Indian Cinema over the years has shown that the male protagonist has evolved from being a muscle man to an emoting human being. Men and women deal with emotions differently. Women are more likely to express their emotions directly and seek support from friends and family, whereas most men tend to suppress their feelings. Men feel that they need to be self-sufficient and provide for their loved ones, so expressing their emotions is a sign of weakness.
These restrictions of emotional expression in many men’s lives can lead to:
● A sense of isolation, resulting in Less support being available from loved ones
● Relationship difficulties due to an inability to resolve emotional conflicts and perceived to have lack of ability to be intimate.
● Psychological problems such as depression, insomnia, and anxiety.

Making Healthier Choices

● Critical to relook at food that is ingested. A balanced and nutritious diet will ensure good health.
● Avoiding smoking, drinking, sedentary lifestyles will reduce the risk of diseases
● Destress by practicing meditation, yoga besides routine. These will help cope with tension.

Finally, ask for help when you need it. Seeking help from a counselor or healthcare professional is okay. Be alert to your mind and body. You are not Atlas who is carrying the world on your shoulder so sit back, emote and enjoy life.
